Ryder Cup 2010 will be the first such event to incorporate a photo ID as part of the ticketing process.According to the official website this will have the effect of "enhancing the spectator experience" and to "reduce the time to enter the event by minimising the time taken for ticket checking"

"To further enhance the spectator experience all public tickets will require Photo ID. This is being organised by 'See Tickets' and implemented to expedite spectator entry and exit, which will operate around the East and West Park and Ride locations and to minimise disruption by any secondary market.

Richard Hills, The European Ryder Cup Director, said: "The issuing of a Photo ID ticket is designed to significantly reduce the time to enter the event by minimising the time taken for ticket checking. Gwent Police have endorsed the procedure which is also seen as a way of limiting those who hope to benefit from re-selling via internet trading sites"

Quite leap of faith to believe all that .With modern technology a simple ticket scan as at the Masters etc takes even less time.

Methinks the motive is something else.

There is a "black market" in tickets for all major sporting events, and this is obviously an attempt to address this issue, which in my opinion will never fully succeed and will cause genuine fans a good deal of upset and frustration.

Many people are not so organised that they can say where they will be in a month's time  let alone one year out.

So if you buy tickets in good faith a year or six months in advance,  and then cannot go to the event for a variety of reasons, you cannot pass on those tickets to a friend/family member etc because the ticket will have your photo on it.

Are we losing the plot  just to thwart a few ticket scalpers?
